The Problem With Android...

[link]

I'll cut you off before you can even get there--yes, this is posted on an iPhone blog, so it's certainly biased. The larger point is that "openness" isn't a free lunch.

So the problem with Android is it makes developers' jobs harder? Boo-freakin-hoo! As I've said many times, a good product empowers the user; I could give a damn if it empowers developers.

BTW, I'm not conceding that the central claim of this article is correct. The apps native to the Android platform are, by most accounts, superior to those of the iPhone - are their developers just masochists? Moreover, Google has a much better plan for developing apps for Android than Apple does for the iPhone - Apple didn't even have an SDK for the iPhone available until two months ago. Google's had one available for months now, long before Android is available to the public. I will say Android needs a one-stop app shop like the iPhone App store and the fact that they don't have one is a problem, but if the apps in Apple's store are inferior, does it matter how easy they are to purchase?

Again, Josh, it comes down to our disagreement about what's important in a tech product. You value convenience and ease of use; I value flexibility and user choice. We're probably never going to agree on this.

Just wait until this becomes popular. Grawlix will be singing a different tune.

PCs are more popular than Macs. I defend PCs. Care to revise your point, Paddy?

What is with this only-letting-one-phone-carrier-sell-the-product crap? I hate that. Really, if it were all about the consumer, it would be open to all networks and carriers.

Grawlix, no. You've always hated me because I'm popular, so I stand by my point.

Asshole.

But yeah, you're right about the single carrier nonsense. I hate that about both the iPhone and Android phones. My hope is they'll open them up for consumers to choose. Obviously, I think that's more likely with Google products than with Apple ones.

Agreed. And I love you.
